The Goa carnival

Sixth February onwards, Goa will take on a lively, colourful form as ‘Intruz’ or carnival!

The law of merry-making, partying, dancing, and feasting will be declared by King Momo, a mock king chosen from among the locals who will inaugurate the festival. King Momo represents excess, a reminder of what will be given up before Lent, a 40-day fasting period that will be observed for religious purposes.

‘Intruz’ was originally known as ‘Entrudo’, a Portuguese term four centuries ago. In its early days, masters and slaves played role reversal and mimicked each other. The idea was to celebrate the equality observed during this period. Everyone belonged to the same class during the carnival.

Today, the carnival is a blend of Goan and Portuguese traditions, and is celebrated by the people all over the world.
